Supporting Self-Worth in Children with Autism

Understand Your Child’s Behaviour. Break the negative cycle. Create Lasting Change.

Practical therapeutic guidance to help you understand what’s driving your child’s behaviour—and how to respond in a way that builds confidence, reduces anxiety, and improves your relationship.

Every child with autism is different

And so is the impact on the family.

Suspected or undiagnosed autism can significantly affect family dynamics as much as a diagnosis can. The importance of diagnosis provides direction, support, financial access, and school management. At the same time, emotional challenges such as guilt, sadness, and grief can contribute to a lack of control and impact both the child and their relationship with their parents.

Many behaviours are not random.

Fear of failure is a foundational essence of operating for neurodivergent individuals and is significantly associated with anxiety and depression.

What often presents are Reactionary Avoidance Behaviours (RABs)—including meltdowns, rigidity, repetitive speech, and obsessive behaviours.

These follow a neurological cycle:

Stimuli → Amygdala activation → Behaviour → Negative outcomes → Reinforced feelings of failure → Anxiety and depression → Cycle repeats

Understanding this cycle is essential—because relearning is possible.

Parental Involvement

Parental awareness and understanding of emotional challenges and the mechanisms behind challenging behaviours is critical to long-term relearning and the adoption of healthier ways of interacting and communicating for both parent and child.

Understanding Behaviour

Differentiation between ASD symptoms (such as deficits in communication and social skills) and exhibited behaviours is essential to effectively support a child.

Reactionary Avoidance Behaviours

Understanding the role of the amygdala, stress hormones, and survival responses such as freeze, fight or flight helps explain why behaviours such as meltdowns and rigidity occur.

The Principle of Choice

Choice and autonomy are fundamental. They define individuality and have a direct impact on behavioural development, self-confidence and overall well being.

Visual Learning

An image is static and therefore allows individuals with ASD to interpret situations at their own pace, enhancing recognition, understanding and then learning.

Age-Specific Understanding

From early childhood through to teenage years, each stage presents different challenges communicatively and socially, as well as in terms of risk exposure and the preservation of emotional well-being.
